Spurious sodium results (1) – pseudohyponatremia
نویسنده
چکیده
This is the first of two linked articles that highlight the spurious sodium values that can occur if an indirect ISE technique is used to analyze plasma samples with abnormal protein or lipid concentration. The focus of this first article is spuriously reduced sodium (pseudohyponatremia) due to increased plasma protein or lipid concentration, whilst the subject of the second [1] is spuriously increased sodium (pseudohypernatremia) due to decreased plasma protein.

Pseudohyponatremia: Does It Matter in Current Clinical Practice?
Serum consists of water (93% of serum volume) and nonaqueous components, mainly lipids and proteins (7% of serum volume). Sodium is restricted to serum water. In states of hyperproteinemia or hyperlipidemia, there is an increased mass of the nonaqueous components of serum and a concomitant decrease in the proportion of serum composed of water. Thus, pseudohyponatremia results because the flame ...
متن کاملPseudohypernatremia and pseudohyponatremia: a linear correction.
BACKGROUND Serum sodium is commonly measured by direct potentiometry (DNa), in blood gas panels, or indirect potentiometry (INa), in metabolic panels run on chemistry analyzers. Abnormal values of the serum non-water fraction interfere with INa, with low values causing pseudohypernatremia (INa > DNa) and high values causing pseudohyponatremia (INa < DNa). Previous attempts to derive a linear co...
متن کاملRapid measurement of serum water to assess pseudohyponatremia.
Pseudohyponatremia is caused by an increased serum protein or lipid concentration producing a "space-occupying lesion" in serum water. Its presence and magnitude must be assessed in hyponatremic patients with, for example, paraproteinemia or hyperlipemic diabetic coma. In the absence of a direct-reading ion-selective electrode system, a method for measuring the water content of serum is require...
متن کاملSpurious Electrolyte Disorders: A Diagnostic Challenge for Clinicians
Spurious electrolyte disorders refer to an artifactually elevated or decreased serum electrolyte values that do not correspond to their actual systemic levels. When a clinician is confronted with a case of electrolyte disturbance, the first question should be whether it is an artifact. Spurious electrolyte disorders (pseudohyponatremia, pseudohypernatremia, pseudohypokalemia, pseudohyperkalemia...
